Bicycling

Bicycling is a great way to get to and around town.

Bicycling makes Washington, DC one of the most livable cities in the country. D.C.'s relatively gentle topography, interconnected grid of streets, and renowned park system have long contributed to a favorable environment for bicycling.

SmartBike DC

The District Department of Transportation's self-service public bike rental program has bicycles located at key locations in the central business district to provide a new way of discovering and moving around the city.  For more information go to www.smartbikedc.com.  You can also find SmartBike locations on our interactive map.

Bicycle Parking

Bicyclists are welcomed, which has over 200 inverted-U bike parking devices in public spaces – with more to come. Several downtown parking garages provide bicycle parking as well.

Bicycle Routing and Commuting

Assistance in planning your trip is available from the Washington Area Bicyclist Association.

Bicycle Maps

A map of bike trails, routes, and suggested roads in Washington DC is available on the District Department of Transportation website.

A list of other bike maps is available on the Commuter Connections list of bicycling resources.

Rent a Bicycle

If you’d like to rent a bicycle while you’re visit Bike the Sites in the Old Post Office Pavilion.

Bike Lane Development Downtown

The DC Bicycle Program Office at the District Department of Transportation is planning 50 miles of bike lanes, many of them in downtown.  For more information check out the Bicycle Master Plan.
