The U.S. Navy Band will celebrate Black History Month in February with a series of concerts commemorating the musical and cultural contributions of African-American composers and performers to the U.S. Navy and the nation. These free, live performances will showcase the presence African Americans have had in the U.S. Navy since the 19th Century. The concerts celebrate not only the significant cultural contributions made by African-American musicians but also the different ethnicities in the Navy.
Friday, February 17, 2012, noon, U.S. Navy Memorial’s Arleigh and Roberta Burke Theater - Brass Quartet with guest soloist Musician 1st Class Cory Parker in a concert that tells the story of the integration of African-Americans in the U.S. Navy.
Monday, February 27, 2012, noon, U.S. Navy Memorial’s Arleigh and Roberta Burke Theater - U.S. Navy Band's premier jazz ensemble, the Commodores, will perform. Featuring vocal soloist Chief Musician Yolanda Pelzer, this concert will highlight the music of Billie Holiday and other African-American performers and composers as well as a narrative lecture component by Senior Chief Mike Bayes.
