Guaranteed Ride Home

Imagine a crisis has just occurred requiring an emergency meeting, and it's 4:45 in the afternoon. Unfortunately, the key employee for the situation cannot attend the emergency meeting because her vanpool leaves at 5:00 and she has no other way to get home.

Situations like the one above occur every day to employees in the District. To help alleviate this common problem, the Metropolitan Washington Council of Government's (MWCOG) Commuter Connections has created the Guaranteed Ride Home (GRH) program. GRH provides commuters who regularly vanpool, carpool, bike, walk, or take transit (at least two days a week) with a reliable ride home when one of life's unexpected emergencies arises. Commuters can use the free GRH benefit for personal emergencies and unscheduled overtime up to four times per year. Best of all, the ride home by cab, rental car, bus, or train is free (excluding gratuity, fuel, and insurance charges as they apply).

Benefits of the program:
This program is an easy way to help your organization maintain productivity, increase morale, and continue the flow of business. Also, offering a GRH program encourages employees to use alternative forms of commuting, such as carpooling and vanpooling, by giving them the peace of mind from knowing they have a way to get home if an emergency situation arises. As an added benefit to your employees, your organization can provide its own GRH program to supplement MWCOG's program.

There are numerous ways to get the word out and encourage employee participation in a GRH program, including the following:

  • Providing a supplemental GRH program
  • Sending out e-mail notifications and reminders with links to the online application
  • Displaying posters and flyers in high-traffic areas of your building
  • Including information packets and sign-up forms with paychecks
  • Including an article in your company newsletter
  • Providing information on your company's intranet or website
  • Including information in your new-hire packets
